This paper will discuss about the topic on social change that is sweeping the United States today. It will try to argue and identify certain factors and aspects that will change. It will also emphasize the role of the internet on this change and the possibility of the internet as a tool that can be used by sociologists.
In the next 10 years, life and society in America will change drastically; the society that we are in right now will be vastly different and unrecognizable when compared to the future American society. The first aspect that is incorporated in the society in the future is diversity and this aspect does not only encompass certain fields but would ultimately all facets of America. There would be never ending choices based on subjects like clothing, lifestyles, food, fashion and ideologies (Hersch 2000, p. 102). The America of tomorrow would present an individual with a never ending choices and alternatives thus, distinctly separating him from his fellow man. Diversity not only on personal preference but also on ideologies, beliefs and philosophies will be presented to the individual. In the past, America only offered two distinct and separate options that must be chosen by an individual, no other choice in the middle but in the future, an individual will be bombarded by choices, alternatives that would specifically suit his taste and mood during a particular day. In this case, there is a rapid personalization and individualization on the part of the individual and society as a whole (Hersch 2000, p. 104).
America will also be changed because of changing and shifting methods and communication. The country will be incorporated in a wireless, high-speed and compact communication network composed of mini cell phones and other high tech gadgets (Hersch 2000, p. 98). Although these gadgets and practices are necessary and advantageous to the society and economy as a whole, this change also brings in negative effects. Increased exchange and easy access to data would develop impersonality, physical and emotional divisiveness between people because messages, notes and communication will not be performed face to face, making each conversation and each exchange of data impersonal and without any touch of humanity and sympathy attached to it.
With regards to the internet, this tool will have a significant effect on the society. It will serve not only as a tool that would further enhance communication between people, organizations and corporations but this device would incorporated other daily tasks that were previously undertaken by the society (Stroud 1998, p. 48). A student can research using the internet, a housewife can download the recipe of a particular dish and a businessman can check prices and make purchases without leaving the comfort of his/her office. It is an important tool therefore that would greatly alleviate human tasks. For sociologists, the internet offers some potential. The internet can be used as a communication device where forums and other support groups can be established to help the sociologist in his researches (Stroud 1998, p. 46). The sociologist will no longer go out and travel to attend a convention or a seminar but he/she would just use the internet to hook up an online video conference with his counterparts from all parts of the country. The internet can also be used as an easy and simple tool to conduct online surveys with regards to certain topics.
