Diabetes often leads to serious kidney disease among African Americans. African Americans are almost three times more likely to have lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites are. Diabetic African Americans are more likely to develop diabetes related blindness.
African Americans are more likely to develop diabetes complications and experience greater disability from the complications than whites. Death rates from diabetes among African Americans are also higher than whites.
