Drug abuse in campus
Drug or substance abuse is one of main health and behavioral concern in college students as alcohol and marijuana are commonly abused drugs on college campuses as research will review the use of certain drugs by college students noting that substance use is major contributing factor in poor academic performance and failure to successfully complete college education. For instance, the New Jersey Substance Abuse Treatment Campus was funded to assess the feasibility of establishing new model for delivering substance abuse treatment services and to serve as research laboratory for conducting comparative evaluations of those services. Research have implied such 350 bed campus (2000) as being designed to improve treatment effectiveness by providing special services needed by underserved populations, and reduce treatment costs by serving large numbers of clients, centralizing services, and sharing facilities. First-time clients who met preliminary eligibility requirements during phone screening were randomly assigned to therapeutic community and chemical dependency programs.
For this study, the need to recognize and execute behavioral principles in such Health Belief Model, Social Learning Theory and Problem Behavior Theory as integrated in order to produce Integrated Theoretical Model for Drug Prevention, theoretical model for drug abuse prevention on college campus. Research will have an outline showing the extent of drug abuse on college campuses as there is a need to put some effective strategies for institutions of higher education with the aim to control and prevent drug use and abuse in campuses
- develop clear policies concerning drugs
- enforce drug regulations
- provide drug education and prevention programs
- ensure intervention and referral for treatment of students, faculty and staff
- attitudes and behavior toward drugs as well as the effectiveness of education, prevention, intervention and treatment programs
Furthermore, the need to recommend specific actions that college presidents and governing boards can take to carry out each strategy and include checklist for pursuing prevention based strategies, resolving cases of drug abuse within campuses. Research findings may be useful for understanding treatment refusal and attrition in drug abuse treatment programs. Despite increased attention given to drug abuse and its negative consequences on college campuses, national data indicates that there have been only small decreases in levels of drug usage for the past decades (2000). The research will have to describe how one campus or university will be able to decrease drug usage on the campus by means of a case study survey analysis. In addition, drug abuse prevention efforts can be in blend of research based approaches for example, the presence of human subjects and preliminary literature review. To assimilate use of social norms campaign as one method of research thus, to be able to educate campus students about degree of drug usage norms on campus as being contrary to what they perceived, heavy drug users within the campus will present certain minority while moderate drug users can represented majority of the students. The public health approach emphasize responsibility the college had in creating prevention policies that established and maintained healthy and safe environment (2005 ). The approach involved identifying individuals and organizations on campus that had stake in drug use prevention and gaining ample public support for policy development and prevention efforts of drug abuse found in the campus. Essential literature in form of articles and journals critique will be necessary and have to be part of this research, ideal for the development of social norms media campaign relevant to drug abuse prevention and termination from college students as the evaluation measures will have to be good partners into the planning process for implementing the social norms model (2005 ).
