- Dyslexia is impairment in the brain’s ability to translate written images received from the eyes into meaningful language. It is the most common learning disability in children and occurs in children with normal vision and normal intelligence. Children with dyslexia usually have normal speech, but have difficulty interpreting spoken and written language. Treatment may involve a multi-sensory education program.
- Children with dyslexia commonly have problems processing and understanding what they hear, may have difficulty grasping quick instructions, and remembering the sequence of events. Letters “b” and “d” or the words “saw” and “was” may be reversed, being typical among children who have dyslexia. Some may even try to read from right to left, may fail to see and hear similarities and differences in letters and words, may not recognize the spacing that organizes letters into words, and may be unable to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word.
- The poor performance of dyslexics in auditory tasks is also related to the phonological theory. Individuals with dyslexia have poor temporal order judgment, categorical perception as well as tone discrimination. Thus, problems on b/d discrimination often arise.
