Research Question on Yellow Journalism
THE EFFECT OF YELLOW JOURNALISM
Yellow journalism is an exaggeration of facts and anonymity. It may present little or no relevance to the existing facts. This type of journalism focuses to capture the attention of the reader for revenue purpose and not necessarily for information, they may even use emotional effects to attract readership. They may use encouraging or intriguing words, facts and figure to do so and may focus on various topics such as politics, showbiz, sports or just about anything that is in demand simply to sell their journal.
It was during 19th century when with the circulation competition started between New York Journal by Joseph Pulitzer and New York World by William Randolph Hearst and basically criticized and accepted. During this period this newspaper created a competition in newsprint media and has been involve in military war involving the United State and other nations since it is being used for political and economic gain in capturing the attention of the masses.
Until today this kind of journalism is being used all over the world not just in newsprints but also in other forms of mass media including television, magazines and internet. They have been presenting information on a twist of facts and figures, this presentation maybe exciting in nature but remain questionable in facts. Some critics take advantage of yellow journalism to simply disturb the media until people learn to identify facts the sales of yellow journalism will continue.
The history of yellow journalism mentioned above maybe a little bit awkward and forceful but what is its impact of yellow journalism as of today and more so how it affects the perception of people in developing countries? We all know that inaccuracy and misleading facts may be believable in forms of media and it is definitely deceiving and dangerous to people who never gather facts to figure out things. Therefore yellow journalism can mislead the peoples believe in current situations they are facing. Political war and media publicity has been used. Take a look about the situation around the world and you can easily identify that people can be easily force to believe in rallies, strikes and any other activities like this because of journal publicity especially in developing nations in Asia and Africa. They can easily be misinterpreted.
In the recent International news of Harold Campings apocalyptic prediction “End of the World” will happen on May 20 at about 6:00 PM has been sensationalized but never happened. This can be another form of Yellow Journalism. Some people including their group has so much faith in this prediction that they have warn people in all parts of the world because of such prediction by a single person. Some religious people have highly criticized such prediction since there is no such date is included in the bible. Scientifically, astronomers have scientific facts that such events can happen only after a billion years. Campings has not much to say but never apologized up to now.
I don’t know what are the reaction of Muslims around the world when Barrack Obama has announced the death of the highly acclaimed and most dangerous man in the world Osama Bin Laden. If it is true or not the fact remains that there is so much thing to do to help people around the world especially in Asia and Africa and that news like this one can be true or a simple propaganda to dismantle the image of such terrorist. The reaction of Muslim people may lead them to revenge their master death which is equally dangerous naturally.
These are just a sample of yellow Journalism now a day which may be different in the late 19th century. Facts and figure nowadays can be easily obtained over the internet and other media that is why people cannot be easily shaken by such news; they can gather facts in just a click of a button.
Some people in the developing community have learned to read and believe such news they cannot be easily swayed in such facts nowadays. People are more concern on what food is on the table rather than foolish facts that is easily identified. People will look for newsprint and other forms of media but the sensational news creates doubt to people. For some people their opinion has not been gathering and the fact remains that what they see in the news is substantial and easy to believe. This people have formed their personality in such rumors and gossiping.
Therefore yellow journalism in all parts of the world divides people in thinking. Government should produce or implement such law that governs realistic news and facts so as not to fool and mislead people. Some journal publicist never really cares if they are believable or not as long as their journal is selling; it will be enough for them. It’s about time to call the attention of media in truth advertisement.
