The world today is in the bergs of convergence in Information Technology the impact of social networking has entirely populated the world from all walks of life its variety and reasons still remains unprecedented, the fact that this technology is very useful and enjoying ways and means of communication which is almost free. The social networking sites are accepted all throughout especially among children and students who are socially ill gotten focusing on exploring the possibility of finding answers to their solitude, to gaining friendly interaction among all users and eventually finding their dream mate over the net through the use of instant messaging, chat online, video streaming media, blogs, file sharing and even games. And not much has been reported that these networking sites have been used for research and information purposes though it is a resource of information, search engines like yahoo and Google are still their preferred websites.
Some very young children simply play games until midnight. While some unscrupulous individual even children and students use this for their means to treacherous affiliation and fraud. While some enterprising individual found the opportunity to promote their businesses and tap a large amount of audience using this god-given technology. From this point of view we can say that social networking is somehow showing effective linkages and sometimes threatening to children and student because of various reasons. The world’s most famous networking sites are “Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, MySpace, and YouTube among others.
In Ghana some of the famous and largest networking sites are Ghanation, Accrahotspot and social site generator Ning, MySpace etc. But facebook still shares the popularity of users in Ghana.
Ghana being a developing country, has one obvious advantage that migration of information and ideas have somehow pave its way through the use of this media. The villagers students and women came out to use the internet for socialization and information gathering and still positive approach have impact the lives of student using the network since many household and schools have not yet ready to use a PC and education is still their chosen ways to eradicate the means of poverty in this country.
Another method of network socializing is the use of Mobile Phone, this cellular phone can be used by students in and out of the campus to update their list of friends in social media, know the latest trends and topics and watch the latest videos. These devices have further increase and interest more and more students to use the social networking sites although limited individual can afford such device, the imitation copy of such cellular phone still exist in this country patronizing the works of fraudulent distributors and manufacturers who sell these products.
Another impact of social networking sites to the students of Ghana is that there are numerous schools that has not yet taken the opportunity of using the computer because of lack of funds, but later on they realize in further study that some children has learned to use the PC on their own by using social media and games too!. According to “Ghana’s school project” this project which aim to provide a comprehensive array of program to promote education through the use of Information Technology.
There was a man whose name is Set Owusu in Ghana who wanted to help his countrymen. Although he never knew how to use the computer but when he came to know some Christian missionaries who taught him, his passion led him to know more and more, since then he began to realize the needs for him to share this knowledge to his fellowmen, children and students. After he graduated from a technical school from USA, he went back to Ghana and established little by little with the help of non- government and non- profit organization the “Entire Village Computer Organization”. Not only literacy in computer he has taught but also he gives motivational speeches. He revolutionizes the use of the Internet including the use of Social media in their town. In the villagers point of view he is amazing. The Entire Village Computer Organization donated more than 100 refurbished computers in schools and other organizations. Owusu even sold his house to help the children.
