Background of the Study
With the idea about poor-resource health delivery country (Nigeria) where facilities lack, access to health services is extremely difficult, the facilities are underdeveloped and the conditions for health treatment are very poor, most especially for woman and children, the researcher came up in improving the public health services in Nigeria.. The existing hospitals and clinics have outdated diagnostic equipment and treatment methods were in stark contrast to the more advanced standards of western civilization. People suffer everyday from lack of proper treatment which results from poor service delivery, an implication of a substandard health system in a country under the pressure of political change and socio–economic struggle.
Yes, poverty is a global problem that is shared by every country – developed or underdeveloped. Even though the eighties and the nineties were the periods of increasing wealth because of the development of new technologies, the gap between rich and poor has grown wider, and the actual numbers of people living in poverty showed an increase (The PANOS Institute, 2002). The number of people living in poverty is alarming, for instance in 1998, statistics show that 1.2 billion people still lived on less than a dollar a day, and 2.8 billion on less than two (The PANOS Institute, 2002). The poverty situation in developed countries is almost as worse as that of the underdeveloped countries.
This triggers the interest of the researcher in public health, the need of studying course that will add significant value to the wellbeing of people in Nigeria and global at large. During the undergraduate years of the researcher at the university, the researcher regularly sort for global health related journals both in the library and on the internet to enlighten more on global health related issues like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, pneumococcal disease, avian flu etc.
The researcher’s Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science threw a beam light to the dream concerning public health. The Biology, Animal behaviour and Livestock diseases and control coursework in researcher’s Degree program helps in widen knowledge and solidify the interest in health issues, and raise awareness on relationship between animal and humans from more than a companion perspective. The impact of zoonotic diseases and the emerging importance of their prevention and elimination, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “about seventy-five percent of the new diseases that have affected humans over the past decades have been caused by pathogens originating from an animal or from products of animal origin”. The researcher began to formulate a useful way to combine academic interests in human health-related issues, and the degree in Animal Science, a pursuit of Master in public health in institution will contribute in understanding the global health-related issues.
The researcher is also passionate to invest in the creation of a society that has the proper standards of health care, which inherently must have effective strategies for the management, increased life expectancy, reduce infant mortality world-wide, reduced or eliminate many communicable/zoonotic diseases most especially, developing countries.
Research Objectives
The dissertation will focus the literature materials concerning public health needs of Nigerian people. The research will also tackle the issues of economy’s improvement and direct implication of political instability. Moreover, the researcher aims to review the different variables concerning poverty. Moreover, the aims and objectives of this dissertation are the following:
- To identify the variables affecting to the progress of Nigerian economy.
- To determine the effect of economic progress to people’s health needs.
- Analysing the value of effective efforts in countering poverty and giving efficient health services.
- To study the current status of health services in Nigeria.
- To suggest suitable strategies for enhancing the progress and growth of Nigeria’s Public health services.
Research Questions
In accordance to the given research objectives, the following research questions should be answered:
- What are the variables affecting to the progress of Nigerian economy?
- What is the effect of poverty to the economic progress and health issues in Nigeria?
- How do Nigeria exert efforts in countering poverty and giving public health and medical services?
- What is the impact of poverty to the increasing public health needs in Nigeria?
- Are there are any suitable strategies suits in enhancing the progress and growth of Nigeria in terms of giving health services and overall economic progress?
Significance of the Study
It is obvious that efforts towards the development of Nigerian economy also contribute to the advances in giving public health services. These advances have attracted substantial attention from academia, business, and government. This study shall be an informative guide to economist, government officials, politicians, and local citizens of Nigeria.
Methodology
The qualitative research method will be considered in this study. There are factors which stand to accomplish from the use of qualitative research investigation. Essentially, researchers gain not only for the reason that of increased ease of use to pre-existing point of view and the contextually reactive nature of methodologies such as life history, but also for the basis that qualitative research methodology helps in addressing the "singularity of values" so omnipresent in past research efforts and appreciate the environment of "intercontextual work (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2003).
